Summer is just about here. Cookouts, picnics, and get-togethers with loved ones are more and more frequent as the weather gets nicer, and, while fun, they can be tricky when you’re gluten-free. Here are some tips for navigating your summer celebrations:

1. Ask the host what dishes they’ll be serving

If you’re not the one hosting, you won’t know what’s in each dish! So it’s very important to ask. Hopefully they will know that you are gluten-free and have some options available. It’s likely that they will have many naturally gluten-free meats available, at the least.

2. Bring your own gluten-free food (like Sonoma Flatbreads pizza) if necessary

If you’re not sure that there will be food available for you, or if the host seems overwhelmed by your request, offer to bring your own dish. You can even ask if you can use their oven to make your own Sonoma Flatbreads pizza too. (The other guests will surely love that—you may need to bring extra!)

3. Be very aware of cross-contact

Whether you’re at someone else’s outing or hosting your own, always be aware of potential cross-contact. Watch out for dips, salsa, or even gluten-free dishes placed next to gluten-filled ones, and make sure each dish meant for those with dietary restrictions has its own serving spoon or tongs.

No matter what you’re doing this summer, you can always find a way to do it gluten-free. It just takes a little preparation—and a Sonoma Flatbreads pizza never hurts, either.
